Noise and Vibration

The New Tyne Crossing has the potential to cause positive and adverse changes to existing noise levels of the area.

Properties where noise protection measures may be required during both construction and operation have been identified. Vibration issues have also been assessed.

There is some potential for significant construction noise to occur and possibly vibration impacts if certain types of construction plant are used. It will be necessary therefore to address this issue through the Code of Construction Practice and the specification of appropriate plant and machinery.

North Tyneside

In the construction phase, noise from the cut and cover works has the potential to cause significant effects at residential properties at Brinkburn Street, Mitford Street and Meldon Street. These could be reduced by erecting tall site hoardings where the existing landscaping does not provide sufficient screening. There is also a potential for noise from cut and cover works and from piling at the dry dock to affect commercial users at Howdon Yard.

Residents in the majority of properties in East Howdon would experience small increases or decreases in noise levels. However, up to 40 properties on Brinkburn Street, Mitford Street and Meldon Street may become eligible for noise insulation measures under government regulations.

South Tyneside

During construction there is potential for significant adverse noise effects arising from the cut and cover operations and from the road servicing these works in Jarrow. To reduce the affects it will be necessary to erect tall site hoarding along the length of the road. These hoardings will also ensure that the site is secure. During operations there is unlikely to be a significant effect on most properties in the area with very small falls in noise levels recorded at some locations. A number of properties in Epinay Walk and possibly Regent Road would experience a small increase in noise levels and may qualify for noise insulation measures.
