Drivers

There may be some disruption during construction, especially at either end of the existing Tyne Tunnel. Detailed information will be available nearer to works starting.

The principle impact on drivers will be the increase in tolls required to pay for the New Tyne Crossing.

The expected toll level for cars will be between £1.55 and £2.15 each way (at today’s prices) once the New Tyne Crossing opens (the current level is £1 each way).

Tolls will be allowed to rise in stages between the date of the appointment of the concessionaire and the opening of the New Tyne Crossing.

Major improvement works are scheduled to take place on two of the junctions (Seaton Burn and Testos) on the A19 at around the time the second vehicle tunnel is being built. There are also plans to improve the other two junctions (Moor Farm and Coast Road/Silverlink). Work is scheduled to start in May 2007 installing traffic lights at Moor Farm roundabout but dates have yet to be announced for major grade separation works at the two junctions.
