1943 Scheme approved by Minister of Transport
1946 Tyne Tunnel Act receives Royal Assent. The Act also provided for the construction of the cyclist and pedestrian tunnels
1947 Work begins on the cyclist and pedestrian tunnels
1951 Pedestrian and cycle tunnels open
1961 Work starts on road tunnel
1967 Tyne Tunnel opened by HM The Queen accompanied by the HRH the Duke of Edinburgh 1974 Operation of Tyne Tunnels passes to Tyne and Wear County Council 1986 Operation of Tyne Tunnels passes to Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Authority 1998 Tyne Tunnels Act paves way for construction of New Tyne Crossing
1999 Team of advisors appointed to take forward plans for a New Tyne Crossing
2001 TWPTA resolves to apply for a Transport and Works Act Order to authorise an immersed tube tunnel scheme. This resolution was reaffirmed in February 2002
2002 Application made under the Transport and Works Act to construct the New Tyne Crossing
2003 Public Inquiry
2005 Secretary of State for Transport approves Transport and Works Act Order 2006 Bidding starts to decide who will build the new tunnel 2006 The Legal Challenge to the construction of the New Tyne Crossing is taken to the High Court
