Journey Times

Average journey times travelling through the Tyne Tunnel are calculated every 30 seconds for both directions between points just north and south of the tunnel portals. The journey times are displayed on the Tyne Tunnel website http://www.tt2.co.uk

People with WAP-enabled mobile phones can also receive this information.

Tolls

The New Tyne Crossing project is entirely self-funded, paid for by tolls and with no burden on council tax payers. When the original vehicle tunnel was opened in 1967 the toll for cars was 2s 6d (12.5p) – equivalent to £1.80 in today’s (2011) money.

The future tolling regime is as follows:

Commencement Date Cars HGVs
1 January 2008 £1.20 £1.50
1 January 20012 £1.40 £2.00
1 January 2013 £1.60 £2.50
1 January 2014 £1.60 £3.20

The Tyne and Wear Integrated Transport Authority made an application to the Secretary of State for Transport to make a new Order to grant it the necessary powers to retain this original three-step timetable. To find out more, click here.

At its meeting on July 25th 2013, the Tyne & Wear Integrated Transport Authority approved an increase in Tyne Tunnel tolls for HGVs from £2.50 to £3.20 as well as a reclassification of vehicles 3 metres or more high and weighing up to 3.5 tonnes, which will be classed as HGVs.

High-sided vans up to 3.5 tonnes are the only vehicles which will change class, from Class 2 to Class 3.

The changes will take effect on January 1st 2014.

The 10% discount for permit users will remain.

Scheduled bus services and motorcycles are toll-free. Use of the pedestrian and cycle tunnels is also free. A 10% discount is available to holders of a Tyne Tunnel pre-paid Permit, available from the Tyne Tunnel offices. Contact 0191 262 4451 or http://www.tt2.co.uk
