Jarrow MP Stephen Hepburn marked the official start of works in October 2008 near the former site of the Gaslight pub.

During the construction phase more than 4,000 people worked on the scheme, most of them local to the North East.

In addition, many small local businesses benefited from contracts at a time of slow and negative economic growth.

The second tunnel became operational at midnight on 25 February 2011. The original tunnel was then closed for its first major refurbishment since its creation some 40 years previous.

Both Tyne Tunnels come into full operation 21 November 2011

The new tunnel carried traffic in both directions until the refurbishment of the original tunnel was complete.

The scheme was completed on 21 November 2011 with both tunnels carrying traffic in one direction.

For tunnel users, used to sitting for long periods in queues, the experience of free flowing traffic at peak times met with universal praise and approval. Comments to TT2 post-completion described the project as 'life transforming'.
