New Tyne Crossing Hosts International Tunnel Forum

5th May 2011

TT2, the New Tyne Crossing concessionaire, was delighted to welcome road tunnel experts from around the world when it hosted the spring 2011 UK Road Tunnel Operator’s Forum.

More than 120 representatives from the world’s road tunnels and their suppliers were in Gateshead for two days of talks on road tunnelling, at the iconic Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art this month. The highlight of the agenda was a series of detailed lectures on the New Tyne Crossing project, the UK’s newest road tunnel.

Councillor David Wood, Chairman of the Tyne and Wear Integrated Transport Authority, welcomed delegates at the start of the two-day conference. He said: “It’s a great honour to host this forum. It’s the first time in many years that the region has facilitated this key event in the road tunnel industry’s calendar and I think people have found it most interesting to learn from our experiences on the New Tyne Crossing.”

With guests travelling from as far afield as the Sydney Harbour Tunnel in Australia, the event produced stimulating debate and shared learning. The forum concluded with a technical visit to the Tyne Tunnels site. Guests were keen to see the new road tunnel and its fittings and fixtures in operation.

Trevor Jackson, managing director of TT2, said: “We currently have the safest tunnel in the UK, featuring state-of-the-art equipment. No other tunnels in the UK have this type of equipment, so it’s a great opportunity for other tunnel operators to properly explore how it might work for them. We were very excited to host this event, which puts the region on the map for this industry.”
