Regular service buses can use the Tyne vehicle tunnels toll-free.
Congestion at the Tyne Tunnel at present prevents public transport operators from running services to a strict timetable. There are currently only two regular bus services using the Tyne Tunnel.
When the New Tyne Crossing is open it will provide a significant opportunity to improve services between South and North Tyneside. A special access will be constructed south of the new toll plaza on the southbound carriageway to allow public transport to bypass the toll plaza and enter the southbound tunnel. The New Tyne Crossing provides an excellent opportunity to extend the Stephenson Jobslink - a £10 million high frequency, public transport link between the major residential, industrial, commercial and leisure developments – to the south of the river.
