Work has started on improving facilities for cyclists at the north end of the Grade II-listed cycle tunnel under the River Tyne.
The Tyne & Wear Passenger Transport Authority (TWPTA), which was responsible for the upkeep of all the tunnels under the river until February this year, has worked closely with North Tyneside and South Tyneside Councils, sustainable transport charity Sustrans and other cycling groups to agree £272,000 of improvement works on both banks of the river. Paul Fenwick of the TWPTA, said: “The New Tyne Crossing, which includes the construction of a second vehicle tunnel, has been the catalyst for improving facilities for other modes of transport too. “The TWPTA and our Tyne Tunnel Concession partner TT2 Ltd are keen to promote the use of the cycle tunnel and to support all modes of transport across the river between Jarrow and Howdon. We also want to minimise disruption to cyclists during the construction of the second vehicle tunnel.” Graeme Clark, cycling projects officer at North Tyneside Council, said: “The area hosts the International North Sea Cycle Route and the national Hadrians Cycle Route and is used by many thousands of people every year - both local journeys and cross country. The routes are direct connections to DFDS Seaways ferries, the coast and city - acting as excellent local links for residents to employment, leisure and education. “We compiled detailed plans and costs of proposed improvements that can result from project with contributions from the TWPTA, existing regeneration and Local Transport Plan budgets.” Plans are also currently being developed with South Tyneside Council to reduce the impact on cyclists of construction work on the second Tyne tunnel and to improve cycle facilities once the tunnel is completed.
