THE NEW TYNE CROSSING

Tunnel survey brings reward for Phil

Commuter Phil Harvey is 200 better off after filling in a questionnaire to help Tyne & Wear Passenger Transport Authority (PTA) establish a profile of current use of the Tyne Tunnel.

The PTA carried out the survey as part of the planning for the second vehicular tunnel across the Tyne. The information gathered is now being analysed by consultants Arup who are leading a consortium to prepare the financial, engineering and environmental package for Public Private Partnership funding of the proposed new 100 million tunnel.

Mr Harvey, of Hunters Court, Wallsend, uses the tunnel twice a day driving between home and work in Washington. He was one of 2,500 people who returned the postcard questionnaire. A prize draw was offered to encourage drivers to participate in the survey.

Councillor Muriel Green lead member of the PTA for the Tyne Tunnels, said: "An analysis of current tunnel use will be of vital importance in determining how the new Tyne crossing should be developed."

"The new Tyne crossing is vital for the economic development of the region and we shall go into great detail to ensure that the proposals put forward meet our needs. The questionnaire is just one part of that processes and it will provide us with valuable information."
