Arup Consortium To Advise On Proposed New Tyne Tunnel
A consortium led by the international consultancy Arup is to advise on the proposed 100 million new Tyne Tunnel for the Tyne & Wear Passenger Transport Authority.
The consortium will provide the Authority with advice on all financial, engineering, legal and property matters relating to the scheme. A public Inquiry will be held before any construction work begins, which is unlikely to be before September 2002.
It is proposed to construct a new tunnel to the east of the existing tunnels between Jarrow and East Howdon. The tunnel will carry southbound traffic across the River Tyne with the existing tunnel being used for north bound traffic.
Danny Marshall, chair of the Passenger Transport Authority, said: "This appointment marks a very significant step forward in implementing this much needed scheme and we look forward to working closely with Arup over the coming months."
The consortium consists of the Newcastle office of Arup, fellow consulting engineers Posford Duvivier, legal advisers Herbert Smith, management consultants KPMG and chartered surveyors Lamb & Edge.
Phil Hall of Arup who has been appointed overall project manager, said: 'We are delighted to have been appointed to advise on the new Tyne Tunnel. We have brought together a very experienced team of advisers who will ensure the project is professionally managed and will take into account the needs of all concerned. We will be consulting widely to ensure the project delivers value for all concerned."
