The level of support for the New Tyne Crossing from the public, business and interested organisations was described as very encouraging today. (Tues).
The deadline for representations to the Secretary of State for Transport about the scheme passed last Friday (19 July) and the Department for Transport is still processing letters.
North Tyneside councillor Muriel Green, who is also vice chair of the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Authority which is promoting the 139 million scheme, said: We understand there have been hundreds of representations made to date and that the level of support has been unusually high for a project of this nature. This is very encouraging and shows that people recognise the urgent need for the New Tyne Crossing to relieve congestion, improve economic prospects and safety, and improve the environment.
Final numbers for letters of support or objection are expected later this week.
It is expected that the Secretary of State will call a Public Inquiry later in the year.
If approved, the New Tyne Crossing will be constructed as a tunnel dualling the A19 under the river Tyne between Howdon and Jarrow, just east of the existing Tyne Tunnel. Each tunnel would carry traffic in only one direction. Construction could begin in 2004 with the new tunnel open to traffic in 2007.
