New Tyne Crossing now on the web
Information about the New Tyne Crossing is now available on the worldwide web.
The website has been developed to meet the needs of everyone with an interest in the project, including local residents affected by construction as well as consortia of businesses who may bid to design, build, finance and operate the new tunnel.
The website address is www.twpta.gov.uk/ntc.
Cllr Mrs Muriel Green, vice chair of Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Authority (PTA) and spokesperson for the Tyne Tunnel and ferries, said: "The PTA takes seriously its responsibilities to inform and consult the public, and this website is further evidence of that commitment.
"There will be an opportunity for visitors to the site to ask questions and make comments."
"I hope that people will find it easy to use and informative, and I welcome any comments they may have."
The website will be updated regularly. The next milestone will be when the Arup-led consortium advising the PTA on the new tunnel puts forward its recommendations on the most feasible options.
The new tunnel will be situated just to the east of the existing traffic tunnel between Jarrow and East Howdon.
A Public Inquiry into the plans will probably be held in October 2001. If approved, the new tunnel is expected to open to traffic in late 2005.
