Excavation Work Completed In Jarrow & Howdon
Work is now nearing completion on the excavation of a series of bore holes and trial pits in Jarrow and Howdon to assess ground conditions for the proposed new Tyne crossing.
Samples taken from the bore holes are about to be tested at a laboratory and will provide important information that will help in the design and planning of the tunnel.
In total 30 bore holes and 50 trial pits were dug during the month-long project in areas immediately above, and next to, the suggested route of the tunnel and also within the bed of the River Tyne.
Phil Hall of engineering consultants Arup which is leading the overall project, said: "We have attempted to carry out ground investigations with as little disruption and noise as possible to residents. It was a most necessary piece of work as it will tell us much about the ground conditions and forewarn us as to any potential problems. We are most obliged to the people of Jarrow and Howdon for their understanding and cooperation."
