New Tyne Crossing: Meeting With Ward Councillors And School Governors At Dunn Street School, Jarrow
Ward councillors and governors at Dunn Street School in Jarrow have been assured that they will be kept fully informed of all developments relating to the proposed New Tyne Crossing.
The school playing field is in the path of the tunnel and much of it will be out of action during building work which is scheduled to commence in 2003.
Representatives of the Tyne & Wear Passenger Transport Authority (PTA) and engineering consultants Arup - who are leading a consortium that will provide the PTA with advice on all financial, engineering, legal and property matters relating to the scheme - were informed of the school's desire to be fully briefed as to how it will be affected by the construction.
Councillor Tom Hanson, who represents the Bede ward and is the PTA vice spokesman for the Tyne Tunnel and Ferry, said: "Everyone is more than aware of the need for a second crossing and the benefits it will provide both from an environmental and economic viewpoint. It will ease traffic congestion and help people to take advantage of the job opportunities that exist throughout the region.
We are pleased the PTA is taking a proactive stance and seeking to communicate with all those affected by the scheme so that they can make plans well in advance. Clearly, these are still very early days and we fully appreciate that matters of detail cannot, as yet, be provided."
The PTA confirmed that it would look to consult with all interested parties and that a consultation campaign was already in place with the aim of communicating how the scheme is developing.
Arup also informed the meeting that it was currently undertaking a number of surveys. Environmental surveys are underway to assess noise and air quality. At the same time a topographical survey is taking place to provide information on existing physical features such as roads and buildings. Soon, a geological survey, including a number of bore holes and trial pits, will be excavated along the line of the new tunnel in Jarrow so as to determine ground conditions.
A public Inquiry will be held before the construction work commences in 2003. ends For further information contact Daniel O'Mahoney, Bradley O'Mahoney Public Relations. Tel: (0191) 2818833. Fax: (0191) 2814954. Issue date: 3 February 2000
