THE NEW TYNE CROSSING

Noise and Vibration

The scheme has the potential to cause positive and adverse changes to existing noise levels of the area.

Properties where noise protection measures may be required, during both the construction stage and operation, have been identified. Vibration issues have also been assessed. There is some potential for significant construction noise to occur and possibly vibration impacts if certain types of construction plant are used. It will be necessary, therefore, to address this issue through a Code of Construction Practice and the specification of appropriate plant and machinery.

North Tyneside

In the construction phase, noise from the cut and cover works has the potential to cause significant effects at residential properties at Brinkburn Street, Mitford Street and Meldon Street. This could be reduced by erecting tall site hoardings where the existing landscaping does not provide sufficient screening. There is also a potential for noise from cut and cover works and piling at the dry dock to adversely affect commercial users at Howdon Yard.

Residents in the majority of properties in East Howdon would experience imperceptible increases or decreases in noise levels. However, up to 40 properties on Brinkburn Street, Mitford Street and Meldon Street may become eligible for noise insulation measures under government regulations because noise may exceed the threshold for eligibility.

South Tyneside

During construction, there is potential for significant adverse noise effects arising from the cut and cover operations and from the road servicing these works along the line of the new tunnel in Jarrow. To reduce these, it would be necessary to erect tall site hoardings along the length of the road. These hoardings would also ensure that the site is secure. During operation of the scheme there is unlikely to be a significant effect at most properties in the area, with very small falls in noise levels likely to be recorded at some locations. A number of properties on Epinay Walk and possibly Regent Road would, however, experience a small adverse impact and these may qualify for noise insulation measures.
