The major routes which carry traffic across the River Tyne are all running at full capacity. Studies over the past ten years have demonstrated the need to provide a new crossing and that a new tunnel next to the existing Tyne Tunnel is the most appropriate location. The tunnel would bring many significant benefits to the region. These include:-
- Removing congestion, so encouraging companies to locate in the region and therefore opening up job opportunities on both sides of the River Tyne.
- A more free flow of traffic which will improve air quality.
- Improving road safety, by taking traffic away from less suitable and congested routes.
Councillor Muriel Green (pictured above right), lead member of the PTA for the Tyne Tunnels, said: "The new Tyne crossing is vital for the economic development of the region and we shall go into great detail to ensure that the proposals put forward meet our needs."
A typical day at the Tyne Tunnel
