The major routes which carry traffic across the River Tyne are all running at full capacity. Studies over the past ten years have demonstrated the need to provide a new crossing and that a new tunnel next to the existing Tyne Tunnel is the most appropriate location. The tunnel would bring many significant benefits to the region. These include:-
