PROCEEDINGS AT INQUIRY ON WEDNESDAY, 19 MARCH 2003

The Inquiry resumed at 10.00am when Mr Bingham of the Freight Transport Association, Mr Robson and Mr Coucher of the North East Chamber of Commerce and Mr Stan Smith presented evidence in support of the New Tyne Crossing Proposal. Questions were put to these witnesses by the Inspector and also by Mr Winch of the Tyne Crossings Alliance and Mr Murphy of NECTAR.

Following lunch the Inspector heard evidence presented by Mr Murphy of the North East Combined Transport Activists Round-Table and Mr Broderick who have objected to the Tyne Tunnels Order. These witnesses were cross-examined by Mr Sauvain who is conducting the case for the TWPTA and had questions put to them by the Inspector.

Following the afternoon break, the Inspector heard the evidence of the St Paul’s Area Residents Association. Their case was put by Mr J Robertson, Mrs Y Bell, Mrs Richardson and Mr Johnson. Questions were then put to these witnesses by Mr Sauvain and later by the Inspector.

At 8.00pm the Inspector asked the public attending whether there were any questions about the New Tyne Crossing they wished to put to him. Questions were then put by Mrs Hepburn and Mr Unwin. Questions were also put to him from the floor on a wide range of issues relating to the New Tyne Crossing. This session closed at 8.30pm.

The Inquiry will resume at 10.00am on Thursday 20 March 2003 when it is expected that representatives of the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE), Friends of the Earth (South Shields) and the Jarrow Area Forum will present their evidence.
