SITE VISIT

Day 22
This day was allocated by the Inspector to allow both the promoter and the objectors to accompany him on a visit of the site and any other place of interest to the Inquiry.
The Inspector was accompanied by Mr P Fenwick representing the TWPTA, Mr Winch of the Tyne Crossings Alliance, Mr Murphy of the North East Combined Transport Activists Round-Table. Also, Mr Atkinson of Friends of the Earth (South Shields) and Mr Smith (supporter) attended the morning session and Mrs Bell and Mr Johnson represent the St Pauls Area Residents Association, attended the afternoon session.
The morning session began at 10.15 am. During this session the Inspector visited Tyne Dock, Lindisfarne Road Junction/Salcombe Avenue area of Simonside, Victoria Road area of Hebburn, Bill Quay, Low Heworth, St Lawrence area of Newcastle Quayside, St Anthony’s area of Walker, Royal Quays and Tyne Commission Quay and the Tyne Tunnel offices. There was a break for lunch at 1.15 pm.
After the break the site visit recommenced at 2.15 pm. The Inspector was shown the A19 development opportunity sites in North Tyneside, the locality of the Metro and Route 72 (National Cycle Route) over bridges near East Howdon and the East Howdon Bypass before stopping at the North Rotunda of the Tyne Pedestrian/Cycle Tunnel. The Inspector walked through the pedestrian tunnel, visited on foot the Riverside Park, Clayton Street, Ferry Street, High Street and Stothard Street areas of Jarrow. The Inspector then visited the Epinay Walk area of Jarrow where he was met by several residents. The Inspector then proceeded on foot to the Morrison car park, Jarrow and there met transport for visits to Jarrow Cross School and the Bedes World and Curlew Road areas of Jarrow.
The site visit ended at 5.10 pm.
The Inquiry is now adjourned until Tuesday, 15 April 2003 when it is anticipated that a representative of Amec plc will present evidence objecting to the proposal.
