Roundabout reopens

Completion of vital building works forming part of the New Tyne Crossing project will enable the roundabout at the junction of A185 Howard Street Bridge / Straker Street and Priory Road, in Jarrow, to reopen tomorrow (Friday 14 May 2010).

The roundabout at the top of the link road between the Tyne Tunnel roundabout and the Howard Street roundabout has been partially closed over recent months to enable construction of the replacement roundabout that connects to the new Howard Street bridge which opened to traffic in February 2010.

From Friday 14 May, vehicles will be able to use the roundabout with single lane capacity. Finishing works to associated traffic islands will require one lane of the roundabout to remain closed until later this summer.

A full closure of the Tyne Tunnel is planned to take place during the weekend of 5 – 6 June 2010 to allow the original Howard Street Bridge to be demolished.

Construction of the New Tyne Crossing which will bring a second vehicle tunnel under the Tyne is
on-programme, with the new vehicle tunnel due to open to traffic by February 2011. At that point the existing Tyne vehicle tunnel will close for full refurbishment, with both tunnels fully operational by December 2011.
