Historic tunnels’ lifts back in service

Users of the historic Tyne Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnels received a boost today (Wednesday 22 December) when the lift at the Howdon entrance returned to service.

Pedestrians and cyclists have had to cope with restricted service at the Grade II-listed tunnels for many months. As well as the lifts being out of service for repair and modernisation, three of the four original wooden-tread escalators have broken down.
